Why do people find death so scary? This always puzzles me. Fine there is pain when you die, but there are so many ways to make death painless. Look into your lives and you see hundreds of problems, each appearing utterly complicated and unsolvable. Wouldn’t the solution be to end life and gain freedom from all these? But many people have plenty of positive things in life that balance with the problems they face. Or a lot of people are optimists and they see these problems getting solved and a happy life ahead. So they would not want to end their lives. But if the joys in life do not outweigh the miseries and there is no hope, isn’t death justified then? For someone like me who does not have a strong faith in life after death, this attracts so much.

why aren’t you afraid of death?
Fear is the feeling you have when you expect something to hurt you physically or mentally or make you lose something. I don’t see death doing any damage to me or making me lose something.
hmmm .. my first thought when I decided to write this comment was that … it’s all BS … if you didnt believe in life after death, then you would value your life even more because this is all there is to it. Once you’re dead … poof !!! It’s gone.
But then … I understood what you meant … when you go ‘poof’ it’s over… forever .. and that’s the appeal to it …. and I’m sitting here, speechless at this realization that how easily I’ve come to terms with suicide being reasonable. The only rebuttal I can think of is how people around you will be affected by it ….. and try to think why people who have even more miserable lives are still alive?
Yes there are people around you who love you and you too love them. Their love and attachment is one of the ‘joys’ i talked about. But it is possible that there are so many other miseries that outweigh these joys.
People who’s lives are miserable are still alive because they believe that someday these miseries would go away or they have a strong faith in being rewarded for their sufferings in the hereafter. Or another reason is that they are unable to properly themselves weigh these costs and benefits.
we have to live
for the fact that death is a permanent ‘’solution” to temporary problems. .for the fact that although life can be understood backwards, it should be lived forward. you can live , feed on hopes. bad things happen but u have to ”live through”. death is scary because numbness follows . scary, lots…and anyway .nobody’s told us how it feels to die so that really may not be the ‘ultimate salvation’ one’s looking for in the time of deepest despair
on second thought…Yeah maybe its ‘ ‘justified” for you. when it badly seems like you have ”nothing”’ in life to ”look for” .
